#OTD 1945, FDR died. One month later, USS Coral Sea was renamed in his honor. In 1950, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first carrier to take nuclear weapons to sea. The weapons would have been delivered by P2V Neptune bombers launched with 'Jet-assisted take-off' (JATO).

April 12th 1982: HMS Spartan joins HMS Splendid off Port Stanley, as HMS Conqueror hovers off of South Georgia... In Stanley, the ARA Cabo San Antonio is still loading, but despite being inside the new MEZ, she remains unmolested, as she was there before the zone came into force.

12th April 1945. Off Okinawa, the radar picket destroyer USS Mannert L Abele became the first ship to be sunk by a rocket-powered Yokosuka ‘Ohka’ piloted bomb.

At 14:45, she was hit in a conventional kamikaze attack by a Zero, which penetrated the aft engine room, killing nine…

April 12th 1982: A thousand miles south of Ascension, RFA Fort Austin meets HMS Endurance and vertreps 200+ loads of supplies to her for resupply, plus a number of military personnel. Fort Austin heads north again towards Ascension and Endurance south, back towards South Georgia.
