A gilded bronze statue of Heracles found in the Forum Boarium in Rome. Dating to the second century B.C., it was likely commissioned by either Scipio Aemilianus (the conqueror of Carthage) or Aemilius Paulus (the conqueror of Macedonia).

This week on the blog: Pydna! The last great battle between a Roman legion and a Macedonian phalanx is both a head-on-head infantry brawl and also a confused unintended engagement.

Also a Paelignian throws a flag, so you know the Romans win.

I love that there is a Roman version of Guts from 'Berserk' - named M Sergius Silus, this Roman commander was fitted with an iron hand after losing it during the Second Punic War, allowing him to wield a sword and shield. He was celebrated on coinage too!

(Pliny the Elder, 7.29)
