I’m really happy FOX 8 New Orleans was able to push real-time news about Hurricane Francine in Spanish on TV and social media. South Louisiana is home to a growing population of Spanish-speakers and I’m proud I can keep people informed in my hometown in two different languages.

New Orleans is investigating "delay of care" issues involving a new Louisiana law reclassifying misoprostol and mifepristone as controlled substances. Meanwhile, the state's attorney general says this is "manufacturing a problem that doesn't exist" lailluminator.com/2024/09/18/new…

Here’s a good 🧵 to follow on New Orleans Health Department and NOLACityCouncil public hearing on potentially grave consequences for women having miscarriages, postpartum hemorrhage and other conditions due to new restrictions on misoprostol and mifepristone. TY Lorena O'Neil for this 🧵

🚨NEW: Louisiana's leading OB-GYN on maternal health has come out against the state's new law making common pregnancy medications dangerous controlled substances. Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell (Veronica Gillispie-Bell): "Where does this end?" wwno.org/2024-09-18/whe…

New Orleans leaders and doctors call for reversal of new drug law reclassifying miso/mife as controlled substances: "Women are not safe in Louisiana," said one official while another called the law a "hatchet job" lailluminator.com/2024/09/18/pre… via Louisiana Illuminator Pulitzer Center

I am not a doctor, but I listen to them and believe them when they express concerns that a new law restricting access to misoprostol and mifepristone may have painful and grave consequences for women in particular. Here’s another physician’s opinion: x.com/rosiewestwood/…

Doctors continue to raise concerns over restrictions to misoprostol and mifepristone beginning Oct. 1. Louisiana is only state to classify meds as controlled dangerous substances making them harder to acquire for emergencies or even for an IUD. Let’s listen to the doctors.

I've been hearing from doctors surprised and grateful that Veronica Gillispie-Bell spoke about her fears around Louisiana's new law restricting pregnancy medications. This is why she decided to speak out: (story: wwno.org/2024-09-18/whe…)

Important to note: The law by Thomas Pressly and Louisiana Right to Life requires misoprostol and mifepristone to be locked. And every pill accounted for. Doctors tell me *that* is what delays access in an emergency. The OB-GYN who reviews every maternal death: "Minutes count."

This morning we presented Isaac & Amanda Toups with a proclamation to celebrate and thank them for their tremendous efforts to fight hunger across NOLA through Toups Family Meal, a nonprofit they founded to bridge the gaps of food insecurity and feed underserved communities 👏

🚨 I’ve also received confirmation that at least one NOLA-area hospital will be pulling all misoprostol off their postpartum hemorrhage carts as of Oct. 1 in response to the new Louisiana law reclassifying the medication 🚨

“Two minutes could leave a massive hemorrhage requiring additional medications, need for blood transfusion and even the need for additional surgery.” Everything’s fine…Louisiana stands for women and babies etc…

Last year, Helena Moreno and I teamed up to hold slumlords accountable. The Legislature acted, the people overwhelmingly spoke, and Meg Gatto continued to shine the light on this problem. Yesterday, the NOLACityCouncil once again held a horrible actor accountable! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
