Good morning! With so much in the world to make you angry and upset, it's worth remembering that most people are good and kind, and are quietly going about their day performing unsung acts of heroism and generosity of spirit. Thank you to everyone who is feeding their visiting

It was the driest March for 60 years in the UK and the sunniest April since records began in 1910, and our wildlife are suffering. It takes so little to make their hard little lives easier. A turn of the tap is nothing for you, but could mean the difference between life and death

Happy May Day!❤️ This just popped up and I was amazed it's 2 years ago tomorrow that I was getting all excited about being invited to Buckingham Palace by King Charles, to recognise and thank me for my work. I make no apologies, I still feel so honoured. x.com/HedgehogCabin/…

Sweet little Palmer who self admitted on Easter Sunday is now on his last few days of treatment, and is looking great. He's gone from the perfect patient, when he was so sick and hurting that he didn't care where he was and what happened to him, to an absolute tyrant - wrecking

Do you ever wonder how cows can be so big and strong eating just grass? Well, grass contains a staggering 27% protein! Imagine, we could end the world's hunger problems if only humans could process grass. But we can't, as our bodies aren't built to break down grass and access

What a great message Jenny, thank you. And a lovely reminder too about the podcast from the wonderful, multi-talented Dr Jenny McKay, the esteemed veterinary surgeon and past President of the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology. Jenny also is the European Head of Anatomic

Darling Christian, who was so deadly ill 3 weeks ago, is now shining with good health and vitality. I released him this morning where he was found, here in one of the lodge pens, so he can either stay until he feels confident to take on the world again, or leave to go chasing

Look what the rain brought out!😍 Two little geranium flowers, and it's made me so happy. Absolutely everyone should experience the joy and sense of achievement that growing something can bring. It can really lift your spirits, and you don't have to have a brilliant garden. It

Lots of calls to the hospital now are from people who have acidentally disturbed a nest. The most important rule is immediately (and I mean immediately, every second counts so no photo taking!) put everything back as you found it and urgently call a good established rescue for

This dear little poorly boy is Feargal. I took him in today, although he self-admitted into the lodge 5 days ago, but still hadn't produced a poo for me to examine under the microscope. But he's been eating less and less each day, which is always a bad sign. Domesticated animals

This is my view down the microscope looking at a sample of Feargal's poo. Gross, isn't it? The whole sample was just teeming with parasite eggs. This poor darling boy, no wonder he self admitted. These are roundworm eggs, and adult roundworms with more unhatched eggs inside

This time of year and throughout June, babies are often found out alone in the day, and here's why. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, but babies are born diurnal, meaning they can be awake in the daytime and feed from mum while she sleeps, and mum can go out at night to find food, knowing

This is Thimble, an adult hedgehog but very small for his age, no doubt due to suffering malnutrition in his formative months - a critical time for laying the foundations of future well-being. He's been visiting my garden feeder each night for a couple of weeks, just before dawn,

Each little life brought here for treatment hangs in the balance. What tips that balance into favour, is not only the work performed and the drugs used, but the help from all sorts of people who give from the heart - their time, their kindness, their encouragment, their support,

Happy Bank Holiday! Just something gentle and sweet to start your week: We often think of hedgehogs as spikey balls, but the truth is hedgehogs only curl into a ball to defend themselves; so when they are frightened, or during hibernation. What we normally never get to see is

Darling little Thimble has been through some rough days, but is slowly starting to recover now, so I've begun treating his ringworm. Ringworm is a fungal infection, the same as Athlete's Foot, and is highly contageous, so stringent hygiene practice is necessary. All equipment,

I'm happy to say that darling Feargal who, just 3 weeks ago was so deadly ill, was released last night in tip top health and shining with energy. After playing Goldilocks in the open pens of the lodge, trying out all the beds and tasting the (identical!) food, Feargal left to

Hedgehogs are great creatures of habit. It's one of the survival skills they have learnt which has enabled them to outlive the hairy mammoth, the sabre toothed tiger, and survive the ice age, and remain a successful species for the last 15 million years. Hedgehogs aren't nomads,

I had a lady yesterday send me a video of a hedgehog she was worried was 'over grooming'. It was in fact a lovely adolescent self anointing.🥰 Hedgehogs self anoint when they encounter a new and interesting smell. They lick the new object, then create a froth of saliva in their
