A key principle of the ethical standards framework is honesty. Those in public life have a duty to act honestly. They must declare any private interests relating to their public duties and take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.

There's never a bad time to remind everyone of the key principles of public life ('the Nolan principles'). These include selflessness, honesty and integrity. We have a right to expect those representing us to understand, respect, promote and act in accordance with these.
