Once again as this YouGov polling shows lots of commentariat (on left and right) are way out of line with public opinion when it comes to more authoritarian measures on public health - there is no anti nanny state caucus among the British public - people are happy with bans.

I’ll bet you 10p that *if* there is a smoking ban in certain outdoor spaces (the details are v.unclear at the moment), that it won’t be given a second thought in a decade’s time. It will have high support, and people will appreciate the benefits and role in wider tobacco policy

Voters back banning smoking outdoors YouGov finds 58% support banning smoking in pub gardens and outdoor restaurants (35% strongly support) Only 35% oppose (18% strongly oppose)

I spoke to the landlord of the lovely community pub nextdoor to me and he said that the biggest threat to their existence is cheap supermarket booze – especially after people got used to drinking alone (often to excess) during Covid.

Was delighted to be at the report launch last night and see the strong focus on prevention. With 70% of heart disease down to things we can prevent like smoking, obesity and alcohol there are major opportunities to reduce incidence
