“You can do hard things.”

In my latest blog post, I wrote a letter to the old me who had just woken from a month-long coma to a different world.

I had no idea what the future held, but I needn't have been so afraid.

Looking back makes me proud.

10 years ago I covered the death of Rebecca McManus, killed by a car driver racing at speeds up to 100mph.

He was jailed for 8 years - then freed after 4, before caught committing more driving offences.

Spoke to her friend Harriet Barnsley ✍️ for this one:

“I feel I have made peace with him. I had to if I wanted to move on with my life. He’s already done his damage, I can’t let him continue to ruin my life.”

This is the first time I've ever tried to do this, and I recorded my first attempt. So here is the raw version. It feels good to have finally started this healing process.

They say you write better when it’s something you care about, something that interests you.

Learning this made me see why I enjoy writing about my psychosis so much, compared to writing about getting hit by a car, which I have to force onto the page.

Here’s a sample ✍️

'No punishment will ever be enough.. I don't know how they'll ever stop him from breaking more rules of the road.. something more needs to be done to deter this kind of behaviour, & dangerous driving in general. It just doesn't seem to be taken seriously” birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-…

Treated myself to a private pole fitness lesson for Christmas 💁🏻‍♀️

It was knackering and painful, and I will definitely be back for more.

Dear Orna Merchant, you're a great travel presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live.

I'd love it if you used the term 'Collision' instead of 'Accident'.

There is generally no such thing as an accident.

Crashes & collisions happen because people make bad decisions. twitter.com/HarrietBarnsle…

In this, I talk for the first time about the suicidal ideation I felt in 2018. Never before have I felt comfortable enough to say it out loud or talk about what it felt like.
