"The white paper is also expected to require migrants to show they are aligned with broad British values". In summary, all migrants will be required to deliver a speech in Received Pronunciation English, upholding Israel's right to carry out genocide against the people of Gaza.

Lots of responses to this - mostly outrage or bad faith, but also from those who see linking language testing to citizenship rights as a positive tool for integration. So here’s a thread explaining exactly why I said what I said, and why I stand by it 🧵x.com/HardmanWil/sta…

There were, indeed, rivers of blood after Enoch Powell made his speech. The blood of Gurdip Singh Chaggar. Altab Ali. Stephen Lawrence. Between 1976-1985, there were 35 racist murders in the UK. Racist violence doesn't occur in a vacuum; it is enabled by rhetoric from the top.

This stems from the dominant ideology of monolingualism - a legacy of colonial nation-states that promoted “one nation, one language” as a tool of assimilation. You demand others learn your language, yet show no interest in learning theirs.

Interesting that Starmer has big plans for people to learn English. Where? Who? How? FE colleges have been decimated over the last few years. Where can people go to get cheap or free English lessons, that are near to their homes, taught by experienced, well-trained teachers?

This pathetic appeal to “common sense” is coercive, monolingual nationalism rooted in Britain’s colonial past. “Speak English” has long been weaponised in racist attacks. Language learning should be supported, not policed. This rhetoric is dangerous and deeply irresponsible.

teaching young children who live in poverty to show ‘grit’ is a classic, individualistic victim-blaming narrative which deflects attention away from structural injustices and pins responsibility on the most marginalised members of our society to undo their own oppression.

A monolingual ideology - a fundamental part of British colonialism and a racist idea at its core - is rearing its ugly head for all to see, all thanks to Labour’s language requirements policies.

The Education Secretary is wrong about teaching "grit". 🧵 She's wrong in her perception that anxious children lack grit and she's wrong to think that those with mental health issues lack resilience. It's vital that we challenge this narrative. 1/

1,300 MAT CEOs, paid average salaries of around £150,000, totals £195 million annually. Before academies there were 153 LA Directors of Education; there still are. This guy's £500k isn't the real scandal, academisation has been - and is - a colossal drain on Education finances.

.@Davidlammy suspended trade talks with Israel due to “dark new phase in this conflict”. Suddenly concerned about displacement & starvation he condemned Israel minister Smotrich's “monstrous” call for “cleansing” Gaza But at same time the Gov had a v different take in court!🧵..
