We'll have AGI long before we figure out how the brain works. The brain is just very, very complicated. In fact, developing AGI is likely a prerequisite in order to make progress on understanding the brain.

Human minds simplify modeling perceptual reality to the physiologically limited operations of brain hardware. There no AGI project I know of that seriously attempts to learn from genuine machine perception, instead of digital reflections of human perception.
