New work w/ Jordan Taylor (Mostly On 🦋) Sarah Fox Sherry Tongshuang Wu Haiyi Zhu on how harm/benefits of generative AI depend on context of use We show 3 cases of how global content filters hinder beneficial uses & coin "green teaming" as bypassing filters for good uses: 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2306.03097

We critique "harms" & "flaws" in general-purpose AI. Instead of marketing generative AI as mostly good with occasional flaws, we should accept "flaws" & design with them - for education, satire, subversion. Not for writing legal cases or replacing your therapist.

How can centering *systems of power* help us better understand AI design and adoption challenges in the public sector? In our upcoming #CSCW2024 paper, we draw on Nader's 1972 call to *study up* – shifting our gaze upwards to examine those with power to shape public sector AI 🧵
