You can find out more about the Syon Abbey Collection, which includes 296 vows of sisters between 1607 & 2010, in our special online guide ➡️libguides.exeter.ac.uk/syon-abbey-col…

The vows in the Syon Abbey archive are a great way to discover nuns who were sisters in religion AND biological sisters! One example is the Waldegrave sisters, who entered Syon Abbey in Lisbon between 1681 and 1694.

Thanks to Dr. Kathleen Sprows Cummings for a great paper on female religious and 'questing' today. Lots of good research questions raised, not least the importance of exploring vocations from a non-statistical perspective.
Thanks to all who participated in a great post-paper discussion!
We love this tiny illustration of a Bridgettine nun, which decorates the vow (dated 1920) of Sister Mary Paul of Syon Abbey.

We love this tiny illustration of a Bridgettine nun engrossed in a book! She can be found in the border of Sister Mary Dominic's vow in the Syon Abbey archive.

These early twentieth century drawings from the Syon Abbey archive are by a novice sister, who - despite her 'horror of spiders' - did try her best to like them!
