The Matthew going up the Avon Gorge to Bristol - today’s dogwalk. This is a replica of the ship in which Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) sailed with 18 men to Canada in 1497. It’s normally docked in Bristol so it’s nice to see it out and about.

Of course, if those merchants were Saxon and still in Brasov in 1459 they and their children probably ended up on stakes when Vlad turned on them.

Aside from the 14 Byzantine churches Thessaloniki there are also walls, palaces, arches, museums, and fortresses. Some of these are technically Ottoman but are replacing similar Byzantine predecessors especially in the case of the defensive system. Thread 🧵🧵 Share if you like

On one corner of Constantinople, hidden underneath an unremarkable building built into the outer walls of the Ottoman Seraglio, sits a Holy Well (Αγίασμα) and small church dating back to Byzantine times. Dedicated to St. Therapon ☦️

One of the great novels of the 20th century is about Huey Long and his murder. Despite this he is little remembered. Most of the ‘Curse’ tweet is BS. He was a long shot for 1936 & the motive had nothing to do with his killer’s religion.

There are a lot of problems with this. but I want to highlight the claim that this system lasted "almost 1,000 years" which speaks to how the Middle Ages are extended & essentialized. The core features of this system emerge in the 8th/ 9th cent. and are mostly gone by the 16th.

Byzantine Rome - Rome is a city with ancient Roman remains and baroque churches. Most people, however, forget Rome's Byzantine past, a past that should not be forgotten! Byzantine Rome (6th-13th century) - see separate thread for 4th/5th centuries! (Byzantine = Byzantine style)
