It was an honor to take part in HISD's commencement ceremony on Saturday for students who finished high school in the fall. With their families and friends, #TeamHISD celebrated graduates' accomplishments and affirmed our belief in their tremendous potential. We are proud of you.

Leading HISD involves talking to families about what they want for our schools, explaining the work underway, and outlining the progress we expect to see. I enjoyed meeting with Cornelius Elementary families, Principal Zaira Gomez, and School Board Member Rolando Martinez.

At our Principals' Meeting today, I talked about 2023 campus ratings and our plan for new NES schools in the fall. I appreciated principals' thoughtful questions and know #TeamHISD will support school leaders, teachers, and other staff as we expand the NES to serve more kids.

There are bright spots, but HISD's 2023 ratings generally show declining achievement. The good news is we are seeing signs of progress this school year, and we know more students can benefit from the focus on high-quality instruction and additional supports at our NES schools.

As I told Ms. Menchaca, HISD is headed in the right direction. Our focus on high-quality instruction and providing more support for kids who are behind is paying off—HISD's NES/A schools saw higher growth on mid-year exams than our non-NES schools. You can read more below.

My team and I are committed to working with HISD's new and returning elected trustees, the Board of Managers, and all who care about Houston's students and seek to put their best interests first.

HISD has a range of educational options, including specialty schools that set students on a path to college and careers in fields that interest them. Our new Cullen Military Academy will add to that list, expanding options for young people who want to pursue a career of service.
