Plastics are fueling the climate crisis.

By 2040, up to 19% of global greenhouse gas emissions will stem from plastics.

To meet the goal of 1.5° global temperature rise & to #BeatPlasticPollution , we need a plastics treaty that reduces plastic production.

During this important week, the international community will discuss the zero draft of the future instrument to end plastic pollution that I was mandated to prepare at #INC2 .

Very honored to have the President of Kenya for the #INC3 session I opened in Nairobi, along with the ED of UN Environment Programme and the ES of the INC.

We must work as one to break our addiction to plastic, champion zero waste & build a circular economy.

Plastic pollution is more than just a waste management issue.

It is a climate issue.

It is a nature issue.

It is a health issue.

To protect people and the planet, we must #BeatPlasticPollution .

Now is the time to find common solutions to common challenges.

We must cooperate.

We must adapt multilateral institutions & foster trust where it is most needed.

The urgency of global challenges demands bold & swift action.

Every minute the equivalent of 1 garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean.

To #BeatPlasticPollution & mitigate its impacts, we must reduce the production of plastic.

Change starts with each of us.

As we begin negotiations towards a global agreement to #BeatPlasticPollution , I was pleased to visit @mrgreenafrica here in Nairobi, with INC Chair Gustavo Meza-Cuadra. Inspiring to see examples of how companies are innovating in plastic recycling, waste collection & trade.

Plastics are fossil fuels in another form & pose a serious threat to human rights, the climate & biodiversity.

As negotiations towards an agreement to #BeatPlasticPollution continue, I call on countries to look beyond waste and turn off the tap on plastic.
