Did you know that because of the work of Kenyan conservancies like Loisaba, Laikipia now has the largest population of elephant north of the equator? #Laikipia #Kenya #Loisaba #Conservation

I think choice is overrated. Two children will be born today. One in the squalor of Kibera; another in the opulence of Beverley Hills. Both are heirs, only one inherits adversity, as the other inherits splendour. Should the former fail at life, do we fault him?

I do not believe that your fate is in your hands. I think such a proclamation is to us what heaven is to the religious: just the motivation to live. Most that we are, & most we will be, is the preserve of chance: where you are born, when you are born, & to whom you are born.

Where you are born shapes your values. For some communities, the ceiling is a daily meal, for others, it is a jet. These two communities will not have similar values. Where you are born also defines who you meet, & the interactions therein. It shapes your aspirations.

When you are born defines your opportunities. Take Elon Musk, throw him in the pit of Dicken's Paris ("A Tale of Two Cities"), and he is no more than a frail, sooty factory worker. Take Nitzsche & drop him in this cacophony of cancel culture, and he's no more than a madman.

To whom you are born defines your resources: The networks you make, or don't make, the material/mental capital you have - how much you can risk. It's not true that the wealthy take more risks, it is that they have better cushions to fall back on. Risk-taking is a privilege.

Sure, President Ruto's daughter & Ratcatcher Mwenda's son may both sell smokies, but they don't sell them the same. They can't take the same risks. For Ruto's daughter, loss is money; for Mwenda's son, loss is his life & his sisters'/brothers'/mothers' life. Loss is death.

These two cannot risk the same, do not share in values & access. People fidget when you mention chance. They confound it with excusing negligence/laziness/tardiness. Yet, I have never met a rich man that works harder than a poor man. If grit is the answer, why are they poor?

I am not saying, sit back - snug as a bug in a rug - waiting upon death. Life must be lived, & lived well. To question heaven, is no sanitization of malice. What I am saying is; chance will do for man what grit can only imagine. Chance is the only true fate, & it begins at birth.

It is also not a condemnation of the affluent/lucky. They, too, had no say in the matter. What I am saying is I do not think them exceptional, and it should not be demanded of me. He who runs fast runs not because he invented himself so, but because he can.

I am reminded of a quote from my favorite book: "The Prime Minister out of office is seen, too often, to have been but a pompous rhetorician; and the General without an army is but the tame hero of a market town." W. S. Maugham ('The Moon and Sixpence').

Another argument that's often fronted is; there are kids who were born in similar circumstances, yet were able to overcome them. But when we look at percentages, we find that it is negligible, about 2% at best, & it is because someone took a chance on them. Not by them, on them.
