You don't know the calf of it!

Being a mother is hard, regardless of your species. At the South Rim, elk mothers are particularly protective this time of year as calves are being born. These moms have been known to charge people & cars to protect their babies.

Dramatic clouds along with some thunder this morning, as late spring storms are passing through.

There is a chance of light rain showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Gusty winds are also possible. (Saturday, May 11, 2024)

Crossing the canyon this month? Traveling with at least one other person helps ensure your safety in the event of accident or injury.

✅ Traveling in a group? Stay together or partner up.

✅ When traveling alone have a support plan with check-in times.

Water's touch, both soft and stern, sculpts the gorge at every turn.

This river, Colorado, a mile below the canyon's rim, has cut through the hard schist rock. The result is an 'Inner Gorge,' a canyon within a canyon.

An unforgiving environment.

The heat inside Grand Canyon can cause shoes to come apart, and heavy hiking boots can trap sweat and lead to painful blisters. Before setting off on a hike, understand the limitations of yourself and your gear. go.nps.gov/GC-HOT (12342)

The 1st Grand Canyon bridge (1921) was 420 ft long & suspended 60 ft above river. At the time, it was the only bridge crossing the Colorado above Needles, CA, (360 miles by river to the south)

The bridge would swing in the wind, and only 1 mule could cross it at a time.

Crossing the canyon this month? Don't store or abandon gear along the trail. Storing gear along the trail attracts wildlife seeking a handout, can look like litter, and degrades the natural environment.
