This river, Colorado, a mile below the canyon's rim, has cut through the hard schist rock. The result is an 'Inner Gorge,' a canyon within a canyon.

An unforgiving environment.

The 1st Grand Canyon bridge (1921) was 420 ft long & suspended 60 ft above river. At the time, it was the only bridge crossing the Colorado above Needles, CA, (360 miles by river to the south)

The bridge would swing in the wind, and only 1 mule could cross it at a time. #TBT

Crossing the canyon this month? Don't store or abandon gear along the trail. Storing gear along the trail attracts wildlife seeking a handout, can look like litter, and degrades the natural environment.
