#OTD in 1905, Moonlight Graham had a few innings in the sun at Washington Park in Brooklyn. Exiled to the dustbin of history (in regards to baseball), his story came back to life with the release of WP Kinsella’s book, SHOELESS JOE. Here’s my painting of him from that same year.

#OTD in 1936, Harmon Killebrew was born in Payette, ID. One of the most feared sluggers of his era, he was also one of the most beloved by fans and players alike. Here’s my painting of “The Killer” that was used by Topps for their 150 Years of Baseball card set in 2019.

#OTD in 1961, William “Dizzy” Dismukes passed away at the age of 71. Considered one of the best pitchers in Black baseball in the 1910s, he was a right-handed submariner and a strategist with an extensive memory. Here’s a color study of him with the Indianapolis ABCs in 1923.

#OTD in 1888, Ben Taylor was born in Anderson, SC. A star of the independent Negro Leagues, his playing and coaching career spanned the decades, during which he was known as one of the best first basemen out there. Here's a color study of him with the Indianapolis ABCs in 1916.

#OTD in 1902, Rube Waddell made his debut with the Athletics. Facing the minimum 27 batters, he struck out 13 in the Oriole Park contest, beating Baltimore 2-0. Here’s my painting of the southpaw loosening up on the sidelines of Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston that same year.

#OTD in 1947, Larry Doby was awoken to a 5:30 AM call from Eagles owner Effa Manley, informing him that the Cleveland Indians had purchased his contract. He’d be reporting to Chicago to join the Indians that weekend. Here’s an in-progress painting of him with Newark in 1946.
