How can valley fog, which is so common in Appalachia, be beneficial for plants? My undergraduate students are doing experiments to find out! We are testing common species from the region to see if fog immersion can help them overcome drought. University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
Another scientific adventure has begun! To the cloud forest we go! University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
Another productive and fun day in the trees in Monteverde Costa Rica. We have completed measurements on four trees for this architecture campaign and have six to go! University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE #climatechangeresearch #canopyscience #womeninSTEM
Our tree architecture campaign continues. We are taking these measurements to understand factors influencing epiphyte colonization, following removal. My crew's climbing skills are being pushed to the next level! University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
First stemflow gauge installed! We are also working to understand how a loss of epiphytes will impact water movement through, in and around these canopies. #stemflow #climatechange #tropicalmontanecloudforest #fincabarpe University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE @teufelbergertreecare
And now we have begun a photosynthesis campaign. So curious to see how these cloud forest trees will respond to the loss of epiphytes. Check out the climber in the upper left. University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
Fog trials on Appalachian seedlings are about to begin! University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
These fog gauges are up at the top of our study trees and will help us understand how morning fog frequency changes across the Central Appalachian landscape. Dawn in the cloud forest. I am in Monteverde, Costa Rica, for a couple of weeks to work with my field team and support two film crews that will be documenting our research project. Stay tuned! @ukyfnr University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE #forestry #canopyscience #climatechangeresearch
Our reseach was just featured on a French TV vimeo.com/906639425/44f9… Thanks to the landowners, the arborist supply companies and the National Science Foundation for supporting this research! @ukyfnr @ukagriculture @teufelbergertreecare Finca Tierra Viva @eltigrewaterfalls
It was great to participate in this multimedia project for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences! The cloud forest is a critical ecosystem for hydrology and biodiversity but doesn't nearly get the press it deserves. My students in Tree Biology are learning about wood structure and function. This white oak core shows large, early-season vessels that move more water when it is abundant and late-season vessels (tiny) that move less water but withstand drought. University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE #forestry
In 2022, we began a project with an ambitious goal- simulate the effects of climate change in the cloud forest by removing epiphytes from entire trees. I am so excited to see this, our first product, in print! It sure took a village! sciencedirect.com/science/articl… University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton CAFE
