Social rels can be one of our greatest sources of happiness, but sometimes we lose touch w/ ppl we care about. Are we willing to reach out? New work w/Gillian Sandstrom finds that people are surprisingly reluctant to reach out to old friends nature.com/articles/s4427…
Last night we were proud to celebrate the launch of the Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness research centre Sussex Psychology.
A wonderful evening hosted by the director, Gillian Sandstrom with guest speakers and a book signing w/Claudia Hammond 📚
Huge congrats to everyone Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness! 🤗
This piece (Gillian Sandstrom) reminds us not to be afraid to reach out to 'old friends'. The data looks at friendships in life, but I'd bet all my chips that implications for (good) work relationships are the same. #networking

Gillian Sandstrom we noticed that fears re reaching out are like those re talking to strangers (Gillian Sandstrom). So, we wondered if ppl see old friends as strangers and if that is a source of reluctance – it is! The more ppl see old friends like strangers, the less willing they are to reach out.
Check out a new paper with top citations by Gillian Sandstrom University of Sussex & Erica Boothby Gus Cooney The Wharton School that used a scavenger hunt where you talk to strangers as an intervention to help boost social connections! So go out there and meet someone new! 😃

Why kindness is a powerful tool in the workplace!
Vicky writes about some of the key takeaways from May's Brighton Chamber event on kindness in the workplace, it's benefits and barriers and looks at the findings from the BBC Kindness Test with Dr Gillian Sandstrom from University of Sussex.
Gillian Sandstrom Wondering if ppl may be more willing in some occasions, we asked ppl what reasons justify reaching out to an old friend. Most reasons did not warrant action (e.g., being in the neighborhood, a shared memory). The only reason that did justify reaching out is to say happy birthday!
Gillian Sandstrom We find that >90% of participants report having lost touch with an old friend, but report feeling neutral or negative about reaching out to an old friend. In fact, people report being as willing to reach out to an old friend as they are to talk to a stranger or pick up garbage!
Did you know that acts of kindness benefit both the giver & the receiver? We’re thrilled that our academics have launched the first research centre in the UK dedicated to the study of kindness!
