Word of the Week: "auswandern" = to emigrate. Related to this word, you may also see "ausgewandert" = emigrated. Or "Auswanderer" = emigrant. When did your ancestors "auswandern"? Mine did in 1887!

Can't read a town name? Type in the letters you recognize into meyersgaz.org and use an asterisk to represent the letters you can't read. MeyersGaz will then provide you with a list of possible towns with your letter combination!

Word of the Week: "alldort" - from there. If you see the word "alldort" on a record, it means that the person is from the town that was previously mentioned in the paragraph - not the town where the record was being recorded. An old-fashioned word many people don't know!

We had SO much fun last week at our Back-to-School Extravaganza! On our last day, we all wore "Back-to-School" outfits, which included old college shirts, high school shirts, super hero shirts, Lederhosen, genealogy shirts, favorite sports teams shirts, and more. Amazing group!

Word of the Week: Straße = street. This is a word you will see in your ancestors' addresses. The "ß" character makes an "ss" sound, and you may also see it written with a "ss". One abbreviation to look out for for this word is "Str." #genealogy

Transcription tip: If you can't figure out what a word means, but are sure of your transcription, look to the next line. It could be that your scribe continued the word there, without any type of punctuation (although sometimes you will see : to show a word continues). #genealogy
