Established in the 9th century B.C. along the Gulf of Tunis, Carthage blossomed into a vast trading empire that dominated much of the Mediterranean and fostered a remarkable civilization from the 6th century onwards.

The team from Gerak Darma is exploring the area around the Punic Necropolis (5th-6th century B.C.) at the archaeological site of Carthage in Tunis, Tunisia.

These ancient tombs, situated in the southern part of the Carthage necropolis, often feature a monumental design with a constructed chamber, although some are simply pits. Exquisite sarcophagi from the late Punic period have been discovered here.

The museum notably exhibits the sarcophagi of a priest and a priestess; the priest's right hand is raised in blessing, while the left-hand holds vases of incense for ritual purposes.
