There are some aspects of my job that I struggle with but doing reviews for Telegraph Travel is not one of them! Glad they kept the line it about looking like the hotel in Dirty Dancing but not wanting to walk up the hill carrying a watermelon.. telegraph.co.uk/travel/destina…

GeorginaFullerWriter The problem for below legal age 16 is the restriction imposed on the hours they can work, some councils use to allow parents authorisation but not anymore. Training someone in catering takes time at a young age and if they can't work the busy shifts it's not always worth it 😞

GeorginaFullerWriter They didn’t even check our age when we were young. I did bar work at 15 and said I was 18. No ID needed, no HMRC system to link your age. Just paid in an envelope weekly. Times have changed though and employers need a council licence for u16 so it’s not worth the hassle for them

GeorginaFullerWriter Employers can get a permit from the local council for ‘school age’ children - so 14/15 year olds. They are limited to working 2 hours a day during term time and 5 hours on a non school day. My 15 year old son works in the kitchen of a local pub and loves it.

My 15 yr old is desperate for a part-time job but nowhere will take him until he’s 16. Other than paying him to help his 10yr old sister with her Maths homework, does anyone happen to have any suggestions? I worked in pubs & cafes from the age of 14 & always found it worthwhile.

GeorginaFullerWriter If he’s a good student - tutoring.

If he can create web pages - there’s surprisingly a number of small businesses and organizations who would need that.

GeorginaFullerWriter There is no specific wage for anyone under 16. It is entirely down to employers whether to pay & at what level. HMRC only interested if earn over allowance threshold. Employers insurance may preclude under 16. Lots of us have written about this. Plenty of advice & information.

GeorginaFullerWriter It’s not much better for 17 year olds, sad to say. I created flyers for lawn cutting, fence painting, weeding etc for my son at 16 and one for the twins for babysitting

GeorginaFullerWriter It depends where you live. Most wait till 16. I imagine times have changed since you were 14. Maybe he can see if he can clean homes or wash cars or something. Summer is coming people would appreciate gardening help etc

GeorginaFullerWriter I always think there’s a business for a young person in running Vinted for people. I’d happily pay a commission for someone to get my kids clothes up there and posted out

GeorginaFullerWriter It feels like it was an expected thing when I was at school. I also did bar work (in my parent’s pub) the favoured place for my schoolmates was M&S. My local swimming pool & leisure centre is often advertising for casual staff so maybe that’s a good kind of place to look.

GeorginaFullerWriter Unpopular view perhaps but tell him to wait until he’s 16, he’s got his whole life to work, no point rushing into it.

GeorginaFullerWriter Does he know what he wants in a career ? Are there any volunteer places around you where he could experience different things? Don't know where you are but I used to get repaid expenses (eg bus fare). Prior experience in something is always in your favour going for something.

GeorginaFullerWriter Paper round? Our 14 year old has been doing it since last summer, used to do Mon-Sat but was knackered so just does weekends. If your lad has a bike and can get up in the morning it’s worth considering.
