One observation on the reason for Trump’s choice of running mate, based on my experience in Russia. Yeltsin is said to have chosen Putin as his successor because he thought Putin would never let him go to jail.

It is great that Evan Gershkovich is out but I wonder about the media organisations like The Wall Street Journal who keep journalists, especially young ones, in Moscow. It seems a risk and for what reward?

Shameful that the LNP have tolerated this cheerleader for Vladimir Putin in their ranks for so long. smh.com.au/politics/feder…

This article should have mentioned that from 1996 till about 2003(?) Nevzlin owned 10 percent of The Moscow Times. I had lunch with him when I was MT editor. themoscowtimes.com/2024/09/13/who…

FT op-ed: "Netanyahu increasingly seems bent on either goading Hizbollah into an all-out war or prompting a reaction that #Israel would use to justify a land offensive into #Lebanon.... Whichever is the case, the attacks were reckless acts that stoke the flames of conflict."

One interesting thing about Japan’s new president Ishiba Shigeru is he campaigned against nuclear power. He backs renewables and energy efficiency.

The good thing about Iran shooting missiles at Israel is that they are missiles it cannot send to Russia for use against Ukraine.

This article is a reasonable attempt to give both sides but it repeats the Israeli line that 1,200 « innocent » people died on Oct 7. In fact, 400 of the Israelis who died were soldiers on active duty. Under international law are they innocent victims ? smh.com.au/world/middle-e…

Sorry. The thing that did most to undermine trust was anti-vax and anti-public health right wing nut jobs. smh.com.au/politics/feder…

Two days after election, Japan restarts a nuclear power plant shut after Fukushima. Other plants have restarted before but this is the 1st in eastern Japan, the area destroyed in 2011. PM Ishiba Shigeru campaigned on reducing nuclear. Maybe not so much? www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/2024…
