Putin has obviously suppressed any memory of this, but these are the numbers for the Yes vote in the 1991 referendum in 🇺🇦 on independence. Every single region voted clearly for independence.

I know it's hard to donate money all the time, but this winter, you can also significantly help Ukraine by buying Ukrainian goods (win-win!) in this 🧵 I will gather Ukrainian businesses that I support & you can recommend your favorites or ask where to purchase something

Two friends Olha Usova and Irina Salamatenko killed in Dnipro by Russian X22 missile. Excellent doctors, volunteers, Irina has two children, Olya has a little son. There’s only one way to fight terrorists. And we all know what it is.

By Russia's own logic and those who support it, Ukraine could claim the right to militarily intervene in Russia's Belgorod (Bilhorod) oblast to protect the Ukrainian language and those with Ukrainian roots there. Well worth reading this thought-provoking thread.

Prison rates in former Soviet authoritarian regimes are in decline, but #prisons remain places of #HumanRights abuse and repression. With @LauraPiac8 we explored these trends in #Kazakhstan developing an integrative theory of penal change: journals.sagepub.com/eprint/KPWR8VU…

Hard to understate how insane this is. Rostov has over a million people, Russia's 11th most populated city and a military hub. It's like disgruntled Blackwater vets seizing San Diego against little to no resistance.

As a tribute to Ukrainian writer and poet Victoria Amelina, killed by a Russian missile in Kramatorsk, please read and circulate her work far and wide. In this thread, I will collect links to some of her writings translated into English ✍️

This graph tells a lot. At the beginning of the transition 30 years ago, Russians were richer than people in all newly-market East and North European countries. Now, they are poorer, on average, than all of them. For two major reasons: first, the depth of the 1990s crisis, and,

Space matters. And so are concepts. The fact that Navalny was (likely) murdered in a "penal colony" in Siberia's far north, beyond the Arctic Circle, is also part of a global history of convicts and colonialism, which has shaped much of what today's Russia is.
