Between Monday, November 6th and Friday, November 10th, sections of the Multiple Use Path (MUP) at the Sandy Hook Unit will be closed to the public. The contractor will be applying paint to the surface between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Today is National Bison Day! There are no bison that live in Gateway National Recreation Area, but they’re a HUGE part of National Park Service culture. You can see one every time you visit a National Park Service site; just look for the Arrowhead! #NationalBisonDay #NPSArrowhead

Just like many of you, piping plovers are escaping the cold and migrating down south for the winter! Plovers prefer the warmer weather of southern Atlantic and Gulf coast states, as well as the Bahamas and Cuba.

Please be advised that Sandy Hook Unit is hosting not just the Beauty and the Beach 5K/5Mile race today, but also some gnarly weather! Be prepared for unfamiliar traffic patterns. The park is open and accessible, but patience will make your visit even smoother today!

And just like that, the final fledgling of the 2023 season in NYC, flew off. This little warrior was born in mid July but took longer to fly. Our volunteer Michelle was the last to see this bird on Labor Day, and caught this miraculous moment. Safe travels, beautiful one!
