In #Cumbria, approval for the UK's first #coal mine in 30 years has been turned down. But in #Wales, a potential new use of existing underground mines could see #Welsh homes benefitting from #RenewableEnergy. We hear from @CoalAuthority. Listen 🎧: timbre-player.sharp-stream.com/embed/item/7a0…

Another gem from Dave Banks - fascinating stuff including mention of the use of the Worlds first ground source heat pump in Swansea 1862 - want to know more...... pivotscipub.com/ges/4/3/0003

Beautiful walk around Margam park and finally got to see the hydropower scheme - the water wheel is called ‘Delyth’ I even got a badge. Produces enough for whole park but has been waiting for spare part since may - so no low carbon electricity since then 🤦

Re-use of the UK's coal mine water resource is increasing in scale. Read our paper to understand how we can demonstrate early insights into measuring & monitoring heat-flow processes to provide an evidence base for UK geothermal research. chooser.crossref.org/?doi=10.1144%2… @CoalAuthority

In Northern England’s Gateshead, the very coal mines that once produced millions of tons of the most polluting fossil fuel are now providing low-emissions heating. Gareth Farr from the Coal Authority discusses how mine water heating could become a future green asset

I'm moving to Scotland in early 2025 (Glasgow-Edinburgh-Stirling). If anyone hears of any jobs that might suit a microbial ecologist/geomicrobiologist/environmental scientist/geobiotechnologist/ environmental microbiologist, do let me know!

Today we mark 58 years since the Aberfan disaster - one of the bleakest days in our history. We will never forget those who lost their lives, most of them children. The strength shown by the community who faced the unimaginable continues to be a shining example to us all.

Great news: ‘In Gateshead, an extension to an existing heat network funded in Round 3 of HNIP will connect an additional 1,250 new homes using geothermal heat from a mine water heat pump.’ Read more below
