Mike Bartner Friedman just stated he’s almost certain he wasn’t betting on the NHL (was likely a different professional sports league) but rather, it somehow involved the NHL (perhaps he placed the bet while on a team trip). Says he would’ve faced even larger punishment otherwise

If I’m Ottawa, I’m still signing Pinto sooner rather than later. Even if he signs for the league minimum, every day that passes, his cap hit gets larger. ($800K halfway into the year is $1.6 M AAV). If they’re able to sign him to his qualifying offer now, that’d be a blessing.

Per Frank Seravalli: “The NHL has a calculation for RFAs signed after start of season that comes with a larger salary cap hit, but only if there is a signing bonus involved. If Pinto signs a base salary deal the Sens’ will only be hit with a pro-rated charge for rest of season”.
