Global change is exposing animals to stress beyond what they are adapted to. We highlight how stressors, such as hypoxia and heatwaves, can cause aquatic embryos to hatch prematurely, as in this figure:

We review what is known about premature hatching in aquatic embryos, including hatching mechanisms, and discuss how this phenomenon is likely to become exacerbated with anthropogenically induced global change. We also suggest future researchย of this interesting phenomenon!
