Global change is exposing animals to stress beyond what they are adapted to. We highlight how stressors, such as hypoxia and heatwaves, can cause aquatic embryos to hatch prematurely, as in this figure:

We review what is known about premature hatching in aquatic embryos, including hatching mechanisms, and discuss how this phenomenon is likely to become exacerbated with anthropogenically induced global change. We also suggest future research of this interesting phenomenon!

Our paper is also featured on the journal cover, with Fredrik Jutfelt 🐠’s shot of goby embryos taken at Kristineberg Center, where the research that led to this paper was done!
