This November 14, it is #WorldDiabetesDay: certainly a very good opportunity to remind more than ever the challenge that #diabetes and its complications still represent today.

We still do not know how many people suffer from #diabetes in Belgium. That is why we stress in our #whitepaper the importance of developing a future-proof #data policy.

Today 1 out of 3 people with #diabetes ignores it. #type2diabetes, as a chronic and silent disease, is all too often detected by chance. That is why the Belgian Diabetes Forum recommends to invest in #prevention, #screening & #earlydetection.

Integrated #multidisciplinary care is often started late in the course of #diabetes. It is all the more regrettable that high-quality care for people with diabetes is available in Belgium. This is why the BEDF recommends to keep improving #diabetescare.

#obesity among children is increasing. It is more than ever crucial, to avoid #type2diabetes in later life, to teach children a healthy lifestyle. #type1diabetes is also worth of serious consideration. This is why the BEDF recommends to develop a child-friendly approach.

At the occasion of #WorldObesityDay, it is worth recalling that the #obesity pandemic is associated with an increased risk of #type2diabetes. More than ever, support for widespread, coherent and ambitious policies aimed at improving everyone’s #lifestyle is needed. #diabetes

#diabetes-related healthcare expenditure accounted for 5.82 billion euros in 2018. It is estimated that a large part covers complications while only 6% concerns the treatment of diabetes & its #comorbidities. This is why BEDF urges to strengthen the prevention of complications.

Care team members are well-trained but often struggle to act as a real team. As persons living w/ #diabetes depend on the care of several caregivers, it is key that they deliver consistent messages. That is why BEDF urges to strengthen teamwork in #diabetescare.
