Referee Roger Kirkpatrick (Leicester) before the Arsenal-Manchester United game in November 1975. If the programme is correct the linesmen are Dennis Drewitt (Hove, left of pic) and Dave Patten (Yateley). Alan Ball scored after just 13 seconds & Arsenal went on to win 3-1.

Referee David Letts (Basingstoke) watches as the ball flies past Brighton keeper Graham Moseley in the Division 1 home game against Luton in January 1983. David Letts was a League ref from 1979 to 1985.

Referee Ray Lewis (Great Bookham) observes a challenge for the ball in the Exeter (then playing in all-white)-Chester game in November 1978. This was early in his 18 seasons a Football League ref (1975-1993) in which he also reached the FIFA list & was one of the first PL refs.

Referee Derek Lloyd (Fernhill Heath, Worcester) observes a challenge for the ball in the Exeter-Portsmouth game in September 1977. He was a supplementary ref from 1972 to 1974 & then on the full list from 1974 to 1983.

Referee Bob Matthewson (Bolton) looks on Leeds keeper David Harvey sends Ray Clemence of Liverpool the wrong way but his penalty over the bar in the shoot-out at the end of the 1974 Charity Shield. Bob Matthewson was back at Wembley for his last match - the 1977 FA Cup Final.

Linesmen Trelford Mills (Barnsley, left) & David Hutchinson (Witney) at the end of the Leicester-Man Utd FA Cup game in February 1976. The former was promoted to the full list of refs that summer & the latter joined him 2 years later. Both had long careers which ended in 1990.

Referee John Mitchell (Prescot) seen during the Fulham-Rotherham Division 2 game in September 1956. This was quite early in his long career as a Football League ref (1954-1967). He refereed the 2nd leg of the 1966 League Cup Final, the last year before the Final moved to Wembley.

Referee Derek Nippard (Bournemouth) seen during the Birmingham-Derby Division 1 game in September 1974. He was a Football League referee from 1967 to 1978, ending his career with that year's FA Cup Final after which he and his linesmen took a lap of honour.

Line-ups for a Welsh Cup match in 1968 between Cardiff & Ebbw Vale. Referee Len Howells (Port Talbot) was a long-serving FL linesman & supplementary ref 1971-1973. G Nolan is very probably George Nolan who later moved to Hazel Grove & was on the full list of FL refs 1974-1981.

Welsh referee Gwyn Owen (Anglesey) with the captains and linesmen Bob Funnell (Chester) & Peter Burrows (Golborne) before the Everton-Manchester City game in December 1979. He became a supplementary ref in 1976 & then had 5 years on the full list (1977-1982) before retiring.

Referee Eric Read (Bristol) seen in the Exeter-Reading Division 4 game in September 1974. This was one of his first matches after reaching the full list of Football League refs where he served until 1985, his last season based in Eastleigh in Hampshire.

Referee Tom Reynolds (Swansea), October 1971. Although he was born in Battersea most of his refereeing career was spent in Wales and he was a Welsh international referee. He was a Football League ref from 1968, refereed an FA Cup Semi in 1977 & then left the list early in 1979.

Line-ups for a friendly between Watford & Greenock Morton in February 1975 - the match ended 0-0. This was a rare chance for local referee Ken Salmon (Barnet) to officiate at Vicarage Road during the first of his 11 seasons as a Football League ref (1974-1985).

Line-ups for Scunthorpe v Exeter, April 1974 - a match that was never played. Exeter didn't travel saying they had too many injuries but the League disagreed and awarded Scunthorpe the points. This would have been one of the last games for Leeds referee Bob Raby (1970-1974).

Referee Don Shaw (Sandbach) receives the match ball before the Burnley-West Ham Division 2 game in August 1980. He was a Football League ref from 1976 to 1988. The linesmen are D. Wilson (Barnsley) & Doug Charnley (Failsworth), the latter on the line from 1977 to 1994.

Referee Malcolm Sinclair (Guildford) in the Gillingham-Weymouth FA Cup tie in November 1977. This was near the end of his long career as a Football League ref (1966-1979).

Referee Dennis Smith (Hornchurch) in his first match as a supplementary ref - Newport v Lincoln, August 1975. He was on the full list 1976-1978 - as he only became a linesman in 1973 his whole FL career lasted just 5 seasons, one of the shortest for one who made the full list.

Referee Trevor Spencer (Salisbury) in 1980. He had a long career for that era - supplementary list 1970-1971, full list 1971-1985. The earlier part of that career he was based in Aldershot before soon moving to Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.
