We were talking in class today about consent to marriage in the Middle Ages, and impediments to consent, and a student asked if drunkenness affected ability to consent. I can’t think of where this is discussed … anyone?

Taught my “Fall of Rome” class Friday, always one of my faves because it defies expectations. The Goths for instance repeatedly ask permission from Rome - they don’t want to end Rome, they want to be part of it, but on their terms. Legitimacy was inconceivable without Rome.

The sumptuary laws in mid 15th century Scotland limited commoners to wearing grey and white. In practice, this was probably sheep's colour e.g the natural colour of the fleece which varied from off white to dark grey/ brown.
