When students are not being assessed by end of year assessments, let them play with language! Give them the gift of fluency development through organized performances of poetry that they self-select from a variety of poems that you provide. Let them get silly. Let them perform.

Student literacy doesn't stop developing after the standardized assessment. Keep them reading. Keep them writing. Show them that literacy is more than an assessment--it is a way of being human. #literacy

The freedom to live; the freedom to learn; the freedom to embrace growth through literacy--all of our freedoms are backed by the blood of heroes. Honor them today--and always--by clinging happily to each opportunity to engage in and share acts of literacy. #literacy #memorialday

Images are useful text features to enhance meaning in texts for primary students; however, they should not be used to read words. Instead, have students cover images while they grapple with words. And like a game, have them uncover the images to confirm their accuracy.

Dictation activities can help students solidify their understanding of how sounds are represented by letters. This also offers teachers frequent opportunities to give feedback to students. Check out Lindsay Kemeny's book 7 Mighty Moves for more practical tips like this!

If fluency is the bridge between decoding and comprehension, we should pay close attention to our students' developing fluency. Grab any grade-level text and regularly track what percentage of words they get correct in a 150-200 word chunk.

When we allow students opportunities to write, especially in the primary grades, we gain access to their understanding of the sound-spelling correspondences that we want students to internalize through orthographic mapping. Writing lets us see what they know in action.

How might you implement ONE shift in your literacy instruction to reach more of your students? Your tireless efforts, your continual learning and progressing practice could be a landmark moment for that one child in your classroom--and that's worth the shift! #literacy

Too often, the curriculum we use does not adequately and clearly provide a compelling why for the different domains of language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Next year, try reframing why we read, write, and speak every day. #literacy
