6 September 1970. Emily Maitlis, was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She was the main presenter of Newsnight on BBC2, until 22 February 2022, when she announced she was leaving the BBC to sign with Global, the parent of LBC, to launch a podcast series called The News Agents.

6 September 1973. Greg Rusedski was born in Montreal, Canada. His best tennis world ranking was No. 4 in 1997, after he was runner up in the US Open Men’s Singles Final, and voted the 1997 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He recorded 30 wins for GB in the Davis Cup.

6 September 1974. Tim Henman was born in Aston Tirrold, Oxfordshire. He reached 6 tennis Grand Slam semi finals, won 15 career ATP titles, and reached a career high No.4 in the world rankings. A spectator area at Wimbledon (“Henman Hill”), is named in his honour.

6 September 1972. 9 Israel athletes, taken hostage by Palestinians, were killed during a bungled rescue by Munich police: 2 Israeli athletes had been murdered on the previous day. 5 members of the terrorist Black September group and 1 West German police officer were also killed.

6 September 1972. Idris Elba was born in London. He’s best known for playing the drug trafficker, Stringer Bell, on the HBO series, The Wire, John Luther in the BBC One series, Luther, and Nelson Mandela in the biographical film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

6 September 1990. Len Hutton died (aged 74). He played for England in 79 Test matches between 1937 and 1955. Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack described him as “one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket”.

6 September 1991. The name St. Petersburg was restored to Russia’s 2nd largest city, which had been called Leningrad since 1924.

6 September 1997. The funeral service for Diana, Princess of Wales, was held in Westminster Abbey, London. It was accompanied by scenes of emotion never before seen on the streets of London. The world-wide TV audience for the funeral was estimated at over 1 bilion.

6 September 1997. Princess Diana's brother, Charles, Earl Spencer, delivered a powerful and emotional eulogy at her funeral service in Westminster Abbey, during which he criticised the media for hounding Diana and blamed the Royal Family for ostracising her.

6 September 2007. Operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti, died (aged 71). He gave numerous live performances and released recordings of complete operas. He was undoubtedly one of the finest and most popular tenors of the 20th century.

6 September 2018. Burt Reynolds died (aged 82). His many films include: Deliverance, Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run, and Boogie Nights. He was voted the world's No 1 box-office star for 5 consecutive years from 1978 to 1982.

6 September 2022. Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister after a Conservative party revolt over a series of scandals forced him to step down. It took the resignation of nearly 60 members of his government for Johnson to finally abandon his attempts to cling on to power.

6 September 2022. Liz Truss entered 10 Downing Street, to become the 3rd woman UK Prime Minister. She was the 29th Oxford University graduate, and the 56th person to hold the post. On her 50th day in office, she resigned making her the shortest-serving UK Prime Minister ever.

The Funeral of Princess Diana happened #OTD in 1997.

6 September 1943. Rock pioneer, Roger Waters, was born Great Bookham, Surrey. In 1965, he co-founded the rock band, Pink Floyd. After the departure of singer-songwriter, Syd Barrett, in 1968, he became the chief lyricist, co-lead vocalist, and conceptual leader of the group.
