The men-only Garrick Club has edged closer to admitting female members, after an emergency committee meeting acknowledged that there was nothing in the club rules to prevent them from joining.

So why have women been locked out for 193 years?

More than 60 lawyers, politicians and academics have called on Bar Standards Board to drop the disciplinary investigation and apologise to women’s rights barrister, Charlotte Proudman who challenged a judge for having “a boys’ club” attitude in a ruling on a domestic abuse case.

Judges who are members of the all boys’ clubs should stand down from rape and sexism cases. It shouldn’t be left to women to find out about their membership of arguably discriminatory clubs — it should be upfront and declared.

The Garrick Club locked its gates to keep out female protesters.

When I asked if we could deliver our open letter, the Garrick Club man said “no thank you” and hung up the phone.

A new letter was penned shortly afterwards, calling for the doors to open to allow women entry- not as guests or staff- but as equals. .Kevin Rawlinson has covered today's peaceful protest in the Guardian as well, which you can read more about here:

These demonstrators braved the rains to deliver a message: Equality for all, all the time. Men of quality do not fear equality!
