Sofia couldn’t find the words to comfort her, because whatever she said wouldn’t change the outcome. So she pulled her into a hug — a hug Sofia needed a lot more than Lorena did.

“We’re fucked, Lori,” Sofia whispered into her shoulder. “We were doomed from the get-go.” It was the simple truth — at least, Sofia’s truth.
