The danger remains elevated due to buried sensitive weak layers responsible for 3 recent remotely triggered slides. We have transitioned to a Persistent Slab problem, with continuing dangerous avalanche conditions in the Swan Range. Get the scoop at flatheadavalanche.org

A recently buried weak layer is proving untrustworthy. Reports of remotely triggered avalanches, shooting cracks, and audible collapses continue to trickle in each day. Slabs will be thicker and more unpredictable on wind-loaded slopes.

5 consecutive days with signs of unstable snow! A conservative travel plan will make for a pleasant day in the mountains. Low-angle terrain shaded from the sun should offer good skiing and riding.

Warm temps + weak layers = large natural and rider-triggered avalanches. Enjoy today's t-shirt weather by traveling on low-angle slopes away from overhead hazards. Flatheadavalanche.org πŸ“· Michael Reavis, Flathead Range

It is possible to trigger an avalanche on slopes without a stout surface crust. Slides will be most dangerous where a layer of surface hoar is buried 8+ inches deep. Snowfall tomorrow? More at flatheadavalanche.org πŸ“· Mark Dundas

This past weeks heat wave triggered large avalanches on a buried weak layer. Riders can still initiate these slides, especially on steep slopes without a supportable crust. If today's weak storm overproduces, the danger may rise. Get the details at flatheadavalanche.org

New snow will favor the southern half of the forecast area. Manage a loose dry avalanche problem if you see storm totals begin to stack up. Triggering a large avalanche on a buried weak layer remains our primary concern throughout the advisory area.

New snow and wind-drifted snow raised the avalanche danger in the Swan Range. Choose lower angled terrain on shaded aspects, or head over to solar aspects where a hard curst has locked the upper snowpack in place.

FAC staff toured in the Skyland area of the Flathead Range on Thursday. We were curious if the buried surface hoar was as troublesome as when we visited 11 days ago. Yep, it is! Follow along to flatheadavalanche.org.

FAC staff discuss how the current and forecasted snow and wind may affect the widespread buried weak layer responsible for our pesky Persistent Slab problem. Follow along at flatheadavalanche.org for snowpack, weather, and avalanche updates.

Saturday, riders reported natural and human-triggered avalanches failing one to two feet deep. Conditions remain similar today; riders are likely to trigger dangerous slab avalanches on a buried weak layer. Follow along at flatheadavalanche.org

An AVALANCHE WARNING is in effect. Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Heavy snowfall rates and blowing snow will overload a weak snowpack. Natural and human-triggered avalanches will become very likely.

A Special Avalanche Advisory has been issued through this weekend. Unusually dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Triggering a 2 to 3-foot slab avalanche is likely. Remotely-triggered avalanches are common.

The Special Avalanche Bulletin is still in effect due to dangerous avalanche conditions. Remote and rider-triggered avalanches occurred during the last 24 hours. More information at flatheadavalanche.org πŸ“· Rider-triggered avalanche outside of WMR

An Avalanche Warning is in effect. Very dangerous avalanche conditions will develop today as a potent storm hits our already weak snowpack with a one-two punch of drifted and new snow. Stay out of - and far away from - avalanche terrain today.

The avalanche danger remains HIGH in the Flathead Range and parts of Glacier National Park, and CONSIDERABLE in the Whitefish and Swan Ranges. Regardless of zone, it is dangerous everywhere. Head over to flatheadavalanche.org for more information.

Riders continue to report signs that the snowpack is not to be trusted. Winds will keep drifting snow into fresh, hard slabs. Although that problem can be large enough to bury and injure you in some parts of the forecast area, the bigger issue is what lies beneath.

The multi-day wind event is finally over, but not before strong winds overloaded a weak snowpack. It remains likely that a rider could trigger a large avalanche on a buried weak layer. Follow along at flatheadavalanche.org for up to date information.
