I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be doing a talk for History Scotland on 24th September. Based upon my well received four part series on the Highland War, this paper will offer an overview of the conflict alongside some new findings. #twitterstorians us06web.zoom.us/webinar/regist…

A charter of Thor of Tranent, granting alms to Holyrood Abbey, between 1153 and 1162. The town of Tranent is referred to as “Trevernent”, an archaic form of the name. Charters from our Chancery records were legal documents that granted or transferred rights, titles or lands.

Roman intaglio found at Trimontium in the Scottish Borders. It is made of carnelian & dates to between 140-180AD. It shows the goddess Victory, with a palm branch, crowning a trophy. A trophy consisted of the armour & weapons of defeated warriors placed on a pole or tree trunk.

Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie is an obvious spot for a fortification, dominating the surrounding landscape on its little mound. This isn't a traditional clan seat though, the Ruthven we see today was built to exert control by the British Government.
