The wrongful convictions of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise are prime examples of the prejudice, inequality, and structural racism that is ingrained in our nation’s criminal justice system.

The injustice experienced by these young men is a story that is all too familiar for people of color in America. Today, African Americans and Latinos make up 14% and 19%, respectively, of the U.S. population,

yet account for a combined 75% of those who are exonerated after a guilty plea in today's criminal justice system. We cannot remain silent in the face of such injustice.

This evening’s remarks from now New York City Council Member Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, Raymond Santana and Kevin Richardson, members of the Exonerated Five, show how far they have come in spite of all they have faced and have had to overcome simply due to the color of their skin.

And their stories are the antidote that will help us defeat the hate, bigotry, and racism that is central to Donald Trump’s campaign and the MAGA agenda.

Their stories also reaffirm our solemn promise to all who have faced discrimination and injustice in America that we must never stop fighting for the wrongfully accused and for meaningful criminal justice reform.
