Before Def Poetry Jam premiered in 2002, spoken word was often tucked away in dimly lit cafes and basement open mics. Hosted by Yasiin Bey (known then as Mos Def) the show gave a microphone to the marginalized, the radicals, and the dreamers.

It proved that a poem could be just as "hard" as a rap verse and just as moving as a soulful ballad. 

It was also the place where we saw different sides of our favorite stars: 

Kanye West performing "Self-Conscious" (which later became "All Falls Down").

Alicia Keys sharing raw, lyrical vulnerability. 

Dave Chappelle delivering poignancy alongside his signature wit. Def Poetry Jam didn’t just entertain; it educated. It tackled police brutality, identity, heartbreak, and systemic joy long before these topics were "trending."
