The ECtHR ruled today that the conditions on the Greek 'Hotspots' Chios, Kos and Samos constitute inhuman or degrading treatment for three people.

(2/6) Equal Rights represented two applicants on Chios and Kos. A man of advanced age lived in a tent for months, unable to wash and unable to meet the most basic needs - and yet was left alone and ignored by Greece.

(3/6) A woman who survived severe sexual violence was imprisoned for several months - together with men - without knowing why. Afterwards she was homeless and lived in a cardboard hut outside the camp, which collapsed in the wind and ceased to exist after it rained.

(4/6) In addition to a violation of Article 3 due to the inhumane conditions, the Court ruled that the lack of information in detention also constituted a violation of the right to information in detention under Article 5(2) ECHR.

(5/6) What those affected have experienced cannot be undone. Nevertheless, the decision clearly shows that human rights are inalienable, that they must be protected and must always be the maxim of state action.

(6/6) And yet the reform of the Common European Asylum System plans more camps, more border procedures, more detention. This will lead to the conditions that the ECtHR has now described as degrading or inhumane.
