Motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of injury and death in children ages 1- 19 years old! Novice teen drivers have 4 times the overall risk of crash or near-crash events! Teens are at high risk of injury and death from motor vehicles! #RulesForTheRoad

It can be hard to know if your teen is road ready! Parents can start by talking to their child's pediatrician- ask for their input. Think about the following- is your teen: responsible? Great about following rules? Show good judgment? Avoids peer pressure? #RulesForTheRoad

Graduated Driver License Laws (GDL) are a three phase system (learner's permit, intermediate license, full license). It's a graduated system to help teen drivers reduce risk and reduce exposure to harm as they are still learning the #RulesForTheRoad Each state's GDLs differ!

One in three teens who text say they have done so while driving. But other dangerous driving distractions include: eating or drinking , changing the music/radio station, applying makeup, driving under the influence, etc! #RulesForTheRoad

We recommend asking teen's to keep their phone on do-not-disturb to help them avoid using it while driving! Also discuss state laws with teens and a parent-teen driving contract to set rules on good driving behaviors. #RulesForTheRoad

A5. Safe2Save is a free app that teens can use to help reduce distracted driving while also earning points to be redeemed for a starbucks run later on! (as well as other rewards) #RulesfortheRoad safe2save.org

Apps like Statefarm Insurance's Drive Safe and Safe help teens remember to keep their phone away while driving. Parents can lower their insurance rates with good driving by themselves and their teens! #RulesForTheRoad

Racial/ethnic disparities exist in the # of traffic deaths in the US with American Indian/Alaskan native people dying at almost double the rates of Black or white populations. Acknowledging disparities can help public health and healthcare workers target efforts #RulesForTheRoad

Communities w/ concentrated low-income and BIPOC have higher levels of vehicle traffic & increased risk of being in a severe crash/dying in a crash. Black children 4-15 years old had the highest fatality rate involving pedestrians & other people not in vehicles #RulesForTheRoad

A8. Knowing my kids and their love for all things Taylor Swift, I plan on discussing the importance of setting up their playlist before driving. The right music for your ride is important; set your soundtrack to your ride before hitting the road! #RulesForTheRoad

A9. Kids are ALWAYS watching. Demonstrating safe driving begins YEARS before your teen gets the keys! Set the example by always wearing your own seatbelt, not using your phone while driving, and driving safely. Discuss it / point it out to your kids. #RulesForTheRoad
