My article on data and colonialism is now out in International Political Sociology. Huge thanks to Emma Carmel for her supervision + mentorship throughout the process. And for the brilliant teaching / course design that originally sparked my interest in this topic.

Last night saw the launch of the University of Bath new UK Research and Innovation Economic and Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Account (IAA), as part of Research Culture Week, with a celebratory event at the Guildhall for academics and external guests to discuss opportunities for collaboration: bath.ac.uk/announcements/…

Shocking findings by borderline-europe on the criminalisation of #migration. They looked into 81 smuggling trials in Greece: Trials last on average 37min & lead to an average sentence of 46 years. 'Smugglers' are the 2nd largest group in Greek prisons, 90% 3rd country nationals.

Great pics from Dr Sandra Daroczi's workshop at the Museum of Bath at Work last week. The next workshop will be at Victoria Gallery Victoria Art Gallery this Saturday from 11 am. Details here ➡️eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-the…

On behalf of the young Kenyans whose lives have been ruined because they did the dirty work training the #ChatGPT algorithm, we have filed a petition to National Assembly KE to investigate how OpenAI and Samasource got away with such exploitation and to urgently regulate tech work.

OpenAI marshaled a global pipeline of human labor for 2+ years to enable ChatGPT & GPT-4 to exist. Workers who dealt with the worst parts are still suffering PTSD more than a year later. My story with Deepa Seetharaman out today on the front page of The Wall Street Journal. wsj.com/articles/chatg…

For every "conversation," ChatGPT consumes the equivalent of one half liter of water. Yet, when 7 AI key companies signed voluntary commitments focused on protecting "rights and safety," they didn't mention sustainability... sfchronicle.com/opinion/openfo… An important op-ed by Internet Ethics.

This was a really interesting - as well as entertaining - podcast to make. Nello Cristianini's description of the 'shortcut' that gives us ChatGPT ('2 pages of algorithm + www') is eye opening. & Emma Carmel on regulating the industry, not getting distracted by the technology.
