There is something terrible hearing Diane Abbott MP being talked ABOUT and not being allowed to talk herself is .. well, horribly predictable and depressing.
TY The Sociological Review Foundation I argue here for a Sociology of the 80s & examine the neoliberal positioning of consumption as solution to social problems. I focus on the MetroCentre but Channel 4’s ‘Miners Strike 84’ offers another example -the site of Shirebrook colliery now Sports Direct HQ.
Very much looking forward to welcoming Prof Lizzie Seal to UoY Sociology this afternoon and hearing her intriguing talk about crime and Gothic imaginaries.
Joseph Rowntree Foundation's annual UK Poverty report makes for grim reading, showing the depth of poverty in the UK. Lone-parent families, most of whom are women, have the highest poverty rate of any family type. More than 2 in 5 children in lone-parent families were living in poverty in 2021/22.
Brilliant critique of 'responsible gambling' paradigm from Charles Livingstone in new edition of criticalgamblingstudies.com/index.php/cgs/…. Purpose of RG's is 'to veil power in a smokescreen of apparent beneficence and concern, without demonstrating any such attributes'
Might be worth saying that many many of the actors in #MrBatesvsPostOffice started (and continue to work) in theatre. The current brutal arts cuts will have long term effects on our culture and storytelling. It all links up. #SaveOldhamColiseum for example.
