Many in the Cambridge community are saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Peter Higgs. Dr Harry Cliff and Prof Tina Potter from the Cambridge High Energy Physics Group group in Cavendish Laboratory reflect on the Professor Higgs' great work.
The search for #GravitationalWaves resumes this morning (April 10, 2024) at 8am PDT, when the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Observing Run #4 Part B (O4b) BEGINS! 📣 #O4b will run until Feb 2025. More info here: ligo.caltech.edu/news/ligo20240… 🌟 #ObservingRun4 #LIGOVirgoKAGRA #Observations #spacetime

Yesterday Was CRAZY! 🤯 In under 5hrs, FOUR #GravitationalWaves Candidates were observed by BOTH LIGO detectors & EGO & the Virgo Collaboration detector! We've had candidates close in time before, but not FOUR!! Image below shows the local time for each of these #GravitationalWave candidates.

LIGO EGO & the Virgo Collaboration KAGRA Gravitational Wave Observatory Event GW250114, with signal-to-noise ratio of 80, shows • mass & spin of the merged BH matches the Kerr spectrum • horizon area of the final BH is greater than the sum of the horizon areas for the merging BHs, as predicted in 1971 by Stephen Hawking go.aps.org/4nkqZEr
