The difference between "automaticity" and "fluency" matters, and Mark McCourt has wise thoughts on how to get there: emaths.co.uk/blog/general-e… Step one: SLOW DOWN...

Mark McCourt Loved this write up! "When pupils practise until they cannot get it wrong, they are no longer at the mercy of mood, fatigue, or distraction. They own the knowledge."

Mark McCourt Remind me of what I once heard about musicians: an amateur is somebody who practises until they can get it right; a professional is somebody who practises until they can't get it wrong.

‘Schools should not aim for pupils to get things right. They should aim for pupils to not be able to get things wrong.’ I try to base my teaching on this principle, but too much material to cover often makes that a challenge. Another nail on head from Mark McCourt

This is a terrific summary of Mark McCourt rEDBournemouth presentation yesterday. It analyses learning in such a rigorous & practical way. Don't accept students' correct answers as endpoints, Mark urges, but, rather as openings.
