Every morning before school starts, kids in my class, not in my class or from my previous classes come to me at my desk to talk to me. I welcome & listen to each one. They know that I will, that I care, that they matter. The fact that they do come to me is one based on deep trust

When you think of a book from your childhood, what's the first one that comes to mind?

I once heard that kids who who are loved at home come to school to learn but that kids who aren't come to school to learn how to be loved. That profound statement hit me hard & I think about it with kids in my class.

Thanks in large part to so many of you, my classroom went from this to what it is now. Thank you for your generosity towards my kids.

What I love about my classroom library is when kids spot books with kids on it who look like them. They get so excited. Representation truly matters.

Our culture is consumed with numbers. Numbers do not matter to me. What matters to me is being present, to make a connection, even if it's just with one person. That's enough. That's what's important.

I will tell you what I tell my class: You matter. You have value. You have worth. You make the world better by just being in it. You are unique and special. I'm glad you're here.

I try to see the best in every child who's in my class, no matter how difficult their behavior might be. Many might write them off due to their flaws & failures, but I would hope none of us are only seen by that standard.

Every child longs to be loved, longs to belong. If my classroom can be such a place for them, if it can teach respect, understanding, tolerance, inclusion, compassion, consideration, & that they all have profound value then nothing else I teach matters as much.
