Timber! Trees are living beings, not "infrastructure". A city needs to care for its tree population and nurture a new generation just as it does its human citizens. Also a good illustration of why the council close parks, and why you shouldn't walk/ drive under trees, in gales.

These trees around the Scott Monument are some of the most prominent and photographed in Edinburgh. It's been hugely disappointing over the last few years to watch what looks like a sustained attempt to kill them off. Our Andrew Heald has been keeping up the pressure:

I've always thought there should be more conifers in our northern city parks, so I was really pleased to hear someone else suggest it to me yesterday. Providing colour for rhe six months when the broadleaves are bare, and shelter/ seed for birds and bugs. What do you think?

Brilliant to see these 86 trees of 15 species, big, small, conifer and broadleaf, going in along Ferry Road. And a happy woodland officer :) @ruthsylvatica

This morning we're at a meeting at the Council Chambers to discuss the Edinburgh Million Trees initiative. Everyone has come to the table with different approaches and ideas, and they are adding up to start to sound quite achievable :-) edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/1…

An excellent thread from Edinburgh Spotlight. If you live near Macdonald Road, please be a good samaritan to these trees. If you live elsewhere, look out for thirsty young street trees that need your help in this hot weather.

Our noise about the threat to the Ocean Terminal Discovery Garden has made the Evening News and is getting stakeholders considering alternative solutions. Fingers crossed it's rejuvenation not demolition for this gem of a pocket park. 🤞🌱 edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/people/lo…

The Discovery Garden in Leith is under threat. Please register your objection to the planning application by tomorrow if you'd like to see it saved. Details here:

There's a secret wood in the heart of Edinburgh. Sauchiebank Wood in the heart of Dalry could be a fantastic asset for an active travel route, but it's under threat. It needs your help today! Watch, and follow the link to find out more: 🌳🚶‍♀️🍂👩🏽‍🦽🌿🚴🏼‍♂️🌳 treesofedinburgh.blogspot.com/2020/12/save-s…

We need more safe routes to cycle but we need to look after woodland where it exists, especially where it could provide a fantastic asset to the community. Surely it’s possible to do both...

Thanks @craftygreenpoet! Walking the site we felt sure that routing the path through the wood should be quicker and considerably cheaper than relandscaping the whole area.
