Ronan Lyons Christopher M. Meissner Douglas Irwin Stephen Redding thanks Ronan Lyons. The Irish famine is critical here; so is Peel's commitment to low and stable food prices, which he thought economic growth was based on. Thus, whenever there was a downturn in the 1840s Peel reacted by cutting tariffs to get economic growth restarted.

Christopher M. Meissner Douglas Irwin Stephen Redding Important, when considering timing of Repeal, to also factor in the Great Irish Famine (as Ireland was part of the UK at this point and one of the three main budget items) and the pressure the Famine put on the UK public finances. Charles Read is good on this.

“Textbooks typically mark the Industrial Revolution as beginning around 1760,…yet according to the most detailed occupational history of a nation ever created…the UK was emerging as the world’s first industrial powerhouse during the reign of the Stuarts.”

I would like to point out that compensating slaveowners was extremely controversial at the time as well. I believe Charles Read knows more about this.

The Mildmay mission hospital was founded by William Pennefather (who nearly died of famine fever during the Irish famine while feeding something in the order of 200 starving children a day from his vicarage) and his wife Catherine.
