Meet Zelin Chen Zelin Chen. He studies the effects of man-made structures on community biodiversity and food web structure in the North Sea ecosystem. He is enthusiastic in cruise sampling on sea.

Looking for some light Christmas reading? Our new study with Alexia M. González Ferreras in Nature Communications shows how long-term exposure to warmer environments can reduce the thermal sensitivity of salmonid fish. A little hope for their response to climate change? nature.com/articles/s4146…

Check out this cool paper in NatureClimate by Benoit Gauzens, Benjamin Rosenbaum, Gregor Kalinkat @[email protected], Malte Jochum & Susanne Kortsch, showing how fish shift from trait- to density-dependent foraging in warmer, more productive environments. Delighted to have been involved! nature.com/articles/s4155…

Excited to see the first paper from the Ring of Fire project Ring of Fire led by Michelle Jackson out in Communications Biology, examining how warming alters biodiversity across 5 geothermal stream catchments around the Arctic Circle link.springer.com/article/10.103…

With prey size from 10 Southern Ocean lanternfish species across 10° of latitude, Eskuche-Keith et al. show that higher temperatures were associated with smaller fish & a decrease in the size of fish relative to prey. Eoin O'Gorman Lucía López López Benjamin Rosenbaum nature.com/articles/s4146…

Super excited to have received The Leverhulme Trust funding with Stefano Mariani to explore how environmental DNA analysis can turbo-boost the reconstruction of aquatic food webs across habitat types and over multiple time scales. Watch this space for 2 x 3-year post doc opportunities.

In high sediment contamination concentration near oil and gas platforms, we showed a general decline in total species richness while pollution-resilient species dominant. Loss of larger predators and dietary specialists showed a degraded but more connected food web structure.

Super proud of Paddy Keith, my first PhD student to completion since joining University of Essex five years ago. Two great papers already (nature.com/articles/s4146…; frontiersin.org/journals/marin…), Defra UK lucky to have him for now, and a very promising career ahead. Congrats Paddy! 👏 👏
