John Wood, a cotton weaver from Burnley and married in 1913, enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers. He served on the Somme, was wounded at Arras, but killed 9 Nov 1917 by shell fire during the relief of his battalion in the Poelcapelle-Staden Railway sector. His son was 1.

Pte Joseph Williams, a 29 year old carter for Barnoldswick Council was conscripted in July 1916 and served with the 2nd Bn Duke of Wellington's (W Riding) Regt. He died of his wounds #OTD in 1917 leaving behind wife Hannah and 4 year old son Frederick. #WeRememberThem

We remember Pte James Blake a bookkeeper from #Burnley who enlisted on 15 Oct 1914 and died on 19 November 1917. He had married Clara Tiloston in 1903 and had six children. His youngest daughter Mary was born only three days before her father died. #WW1 #WeRememberThem

18 year old Stephen Carroll, a foundry worker, from Burnley, enlisted into the Special Reserve in July 1914. He was wounded at Fromelle in 1915 and survived the Somme in 1916. He was killed during ‘trench holding duties' on the Passchendaele Ridge in 1917. #WW1 #LestWeForget

Pte Alexander MacNab, one of 10 children, like his siblings, worked in a Burnley cotton mill from the age of 12. He escaped the mill for the army in 1911, when at the age 21, he enlisted. Called up in Aug 1914 and served from the start of the #WW1. He died 22 November 1917.

Joseph Hoole, a weaver from Preston and a Territorial before #WW1 fought at 3rd Ypres in 1917 and at Cambrai where he was seriously wounded in both legs, right arm and chest. He later died in a Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme.

Pte Walter Catlow from Burnley, a 33 year old married man from Burnley enlisted in September 1914 and saw his first frontline service in late 1915. Three times seriously injured on the Somme he went missing in action when out with a front-line working party on 6 December 1917.

#OTD, 17 Dec 1916 - The official end of the Battle of the Somme. Never forget that it was also a major French Army battle too with a lot of lessons learned (there are a few - maybe surprising to some - stats in this thread also):

Simon Bennett, a miner from Burnley and a former soldier in the Indian Army was called up at the outbreak of war in 1914. He was sent to France 13 Aug 1914 as a signaller with 'C' Company of the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was killed near La Bassee on 21 December 1914.
